Keynote Speakers:

Quin Etnyre

"Kids + Making = A New Kind of Education"
  • Bringing "making" into schools is a worthy challenge that will transform K-12 education.  Fifteen year old Quin Etnyre believes that making teaches kids thinking skills, teamwork, independence, creativity, resilience, and tools for the future.  When Quin was in fifth grade, he started learning how to program electronics. By the time he was 13 he had created his own company (Qtechknow) designing and selling electronic ArduSensors and kits that enable beginners, intermediate and advanced users to start making and programming with the open-source computing platform Arduino. Now this 15 year old whizz kid has plans to revolutionize the education system, integrating electronics into everyday classes and he believes his journey over the last several years is one that is accessible to anyone - kids and adults, no matter what you are interested in making. In his keynote presentation, Quin will discuss how his success came about, including how he started his own programs in "making" in the Lucia Mar School District a few years ago, and some of the successes and challenges he faced in doing so.

Dr. Sean Anderson
New Tools For Exploring Our Coast and Ocean Are Within Your Reach
  • Only in the last few years have we been able to take advantage of affordable, miniaturized electronics ushered in by the smart phone revolution.  Cheap, power sipping computer chips are melding with ever smaller, lighter batteries, 3D printing, and the open source movement to put the ability to explore our marine environment into nearly everyone’s hands. CSU Channel Islands is fast becoming the go-to location for such innovation.  Dr. Sean Anderson is an associate professor of environmental science and resource management at CSU Channel Islands. He and his colleagues are training everyone from undergrads to local middle schoolers to design, build, service, operate, and collect robust data with these tools.  He will discuss their efforts and some of the new insights they are gaining by having these new capabilities. The presentation will include a demo of some of the team's platforms and a discussion of ideas for how you and your students might get going with your own projects.
