Morning Keynote

Glen Warren is the Encinitas Union District Director of Literacies, Outreach, and Libraries (in other words, he is the LOL Director). With twin Master’s degrees in educational leadership and library science, as well as expertise in educational technology, Glen Warren straddles the worlds of the classroom and the library as well as the worlds of technology and information.

Glen co-wrote the California Model School Library Standards addressing information and digital literacy outcomes for K-12 public education students and the California Career Technical Education (CTE) standards for the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector.

Glen's keynote presentation, "
Extreme Relevance - Personalized Learning through Research and Design Thinking," addressed systems of meaningfully infusing the personal curiosities of each student into all disciplines, by providing field tested learning protocols that result in true learner empowerment! When researching skills meet design thinking, students and teachers LOVE it! - STEM Synergy baby!

Afternoon Keynote

Adela Wee is a systems engineer at Carnegie Robotics, LLC. Over the past decade, she has been immersed in the field of robotics, receiving two degrees in robotics engineering, and is now a professional in the industry.  Her non-traditional views on engineering stem from attending Olin College, where she tackled complex problems from automating agricultural systems to aiding marine biologists in collecting whale blow. Adela has since picked up an interest in engineering education, and has co-taught courses in systems thinking in engineering and ethics, and assisted in electromechanical prototyping.

In her presentation "I Think, Therefore I Engineer," Adela discussed how most people apply an engineering thought process in their daily lives without even realizing it and walked participants through the engineering design process as a means to accomplish a goal.

A NOTE ABOUT THIS YEAR'S CONFERENCE THEME...
In 2016 Ventura County was designated as a STEM Learning Ecoystem due to its efforts to create collaborative relationships that support STEM Education across multiple domains: formal education, informal education, business and industry, and the community in general. For more than 20 years, GCSN has played an important role in helping to develop and nurture this ecosystem, to include outreach to the surrounding counties of Los Angeles, Kern, and Santa Barbara. The GCSN Conference for STEM Education continues to bring teachers and the community together to share ideas and build inter-agency partnerships and collaborations across our beautiful gold coast and southcentral California.
