Asian Math Education
presented by BiJian Fan, Ph.D.
Adjunct Faculty, CSU Channel Islands

Grade Level: K-5
Standards: Common Core Math and Instructional Strategies
Presentation Type: Demonstration/Lecture/Discussion

Studies showed that language made a difference in asian’s top ranking math education. English lacks linguistic transparency in number system, place value, fraction, and other math concepts, it hinders children in learning math. As a non-linguistic remedy, abacus conceptualizes arithmetic visually. Its success has been replicated in the West. This class will discuss the linguistic impact, abacus operation, and its effectiveness in math education.
