Claims-Evidence-Reasoning: Scientific Explanation
presented by Heather Wilde
Western Regional Training Manager, STEMscopes

Picture

Grade Level: 3-12
Standards: Physical Science (including chemistry and physics), Instructional Strategies

Presentation Type: Hands-On

Reduce teacher talk and increase purposeful student talk as we model consensus building through argumentation around intriguing science phenomenon that matter. ELA skills and the 21st Century Skills of communication and collaboration are a must in the STEM classroom!
The key to successful STEM implementation is student proficient use of the scientific and engineering practices which are one of the 3 dimensions of the NGSS. Essential to discourse about scientific concepts is the ability to engage in argumentation concerning the validity of evidence and the ability to develop claim statements based on evidence, justified by scientific reasoning based on concepts. This is Claim-Evidence-Reasoning.

About Heather Wilde
I received a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies from Texas A&M University. I started my career as a third grade Reading and Language Arts (RLA) teacher in Weimer, Texas before moving to the Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District, spending 10 years in elementary Math and Science classrooms. I then became a campus Science Instructional Specialist. I started writing curriculum for TAKScopes in 2009, and became a full time STEMscopes Curriculum Coach in 2013. As STEMscopes wrote curriculum to the Next Generation Science Standards I traveled across the United States providing professional development and training on the new curriculum.  Currently, I am the Western U.S. Regional Manager of STEM Professional Development, and with my team, I help develop, coordinate, and provide professional development to science educators.   STEMscopes changed the way I taught Science and I want to help share it with as many Science educators and students as possible.
