presented by Don Schulteis, MA. MST, Retired Teacher and Administrator, American Meteorological Society and Olga Schulteis

Grade Level: 6-12
Standards: NGSS, Earth Science (including geology), Space Science, Environmental Science, and Instructional Strategies
Presentation Type: Hands-On

An NGSS-aligned, 5-E lesson calling on students to generate and use a model showing how wind and ocean currents are responsible for heat redistribution all over the earth. An updated American Meteorological Society Maury module incorporating SEP's, CCC's with DCI's.This workshop demonstrates how to use 5E instruction and what it means to develop and use a model.
About Don Schulteis
Don Schulteis has been trained by NSTA to be a trainer of trainers for NGSS.  He is also one of a cadre of over 100 Education Resource Associates across the country with The American Meteorological Society and has served in this capacity for over 20 years.  He was trained for this role by the AMS at the National Weather Training Center in Kansas City, Missouri, the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and through annual summer conferences.  These trainings in meteorology, oceanography, hydrology, and climate equip Education Resource Associates to present workshops under the banner of Project Atmosphere and the Maury Project.  There are some 25 different workshop titles.  Each workshop introduces one or more lessons that participants can present immediately in their own classrooms.  The AMS trainings also qualify Associates to mentor the online courses which Don mentored for 15 years.  These are DataStreme Atmosphere, Water In the Earth’s System (now dormant), DataStreme Ocean, and DataStreme Earth’s Climate System.

In his AMS capacity, Don has regularly presented workshops for the Gold Coast Science Network since 1999.  He has presented AMS workshops at in-service programs for several school districts, for CSTA, CTA Good Teaching Conferences, and other conference venues stretching from Burlingame south to San Diego.  He also presented at the Seventh International Conference on School and Popular Meteorological and Oceanographic Education hosted by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado.  Another presentation was at the Federation of Earth Science Information Partners when they met at the University of California in Santa Barbra.  During the last 20 years he has presented over 125 such workshops.
Now retired after a 50 year career as both a teacher and high school principal, Don has taught:  chemistry, physics, geology, earth science, biology, general science and Middle School general science.  Don holds a BS from Concordia University—Chicago, a Master of Science Teaching degree from the University of Arizona in Tucson, and an MA in education from California State University at Los Angeles.
