Morning Keynote
Kids + Making = A New Kind of Education
presented by Quin Etnyre

Bringing "making" into schools is a worthy challenge that will transform K-12 education.  Fifteen year old Quin Etnyre believes that making teaches kids thinking skills, teamwork, independence, creativity, resilience, and tools for the future.

When Quin was in fifth grade, he started learning how to program electronics. By the time he was 13 he had created his own company (Qtechknow) designing and selling electronic ArduSensors and kits that enable beginners, intermediate and advanced users to start making and programming with the open-source computing platform Arduino. Now this 15 year old whizz kid has plans to revolutionize the education system, integrating electronics into everyday classes and he believes his journey over the last several years is one that is accessible to anyone - kids and adults, no matter what you are interested in making. In his keynote presentation, Quin discussed how his success came about, including how he started his own programs in "making" in the Lucia Mar School District a few years ago, and some of the successes and challenges he faced in doing so. Participants overwhelmingly agreed it was a great way to start the day!
